Images from MS-Word while using viewdoc-macro are not shown in confluence

NOTE: This bug report is for Confluence Cloud. Using Confluence Server? See the corresponding bug report.

So if we attach a MS-Word-File to a confluence page and try to show it by using the Word-Plugin we only get to see the text, but no Pictures that were in the doc.

It worked in 4.3.7 without Problems

I am seeing this issue in Confluence 5.9.11 server.  I am not sure how to change the z-index.  I assume that is from within Word?  My image was already set to inline within the Word document.  It looks fine in Word, but looks like the top when I render it using the Word macro.  The bottom is the image saved as an image from Word and then attached and rendered.

I've seen this in Confluence 5.9.9. The images were in the DOM but has a very large negative z-index (e.g. z-index: -65535;) that made them disappear (i.e. removing the z-index property made them appear). These images were all positioned "behind text" changing them to inline and re-uploading the attachment fixed the issue.

We have this problem on both old and new Word docs on Confluence 5.9.4. But it does not always occur and appears to be random. We also have a support ticket on it. This needs to be resolved as it is a long standing problem and this Macro is the best method we've seen to make a Word doc appears as native content.

Hi all, thanks for your feedback. I wasn't able to reproduce this issue using the attached Word doc (sharks.docx), on Confluence 5.7.5, so I'd like to get some more information from you, because it sounds like some of you are having this problem on the latest versions of Confluence too.

            1. Could anyone please upload a file that they're having trouble with?
            2. I'd also like to confirm if it's only existing pages that were created on an older version of Confluence, or if it occurs with new files that are uploaded into Confluence 5.7+.

jess8, it sounds like you have a new file that doesn't work when uploaded into 5.7, is that correct? Would it be possible to attach it to this ticket, if it doesn't contain sensitive information?

Also, in Confluence 5.7 we introduced a new way to embed, preview and collaborate on files (more information here). This new experience does not require you to insert a macro first, but automatically embeds a preview of the file if you upload it. In addition, it supports many more file types and additional features which are not available in the View File macro. I'd recommend having a look at this new file preview as well.

Ok, I have a workaround that corrected the problem for me. For one of the problem pages, I downloaded the attachment and then re-uploaded it, creating a new attachment version. The images once again became visible in the page.

Without knowing the internals of Atlassian code, my guess is that the new way files are being handled ("first-class citizens") is the cause, and that some piece of file meta-data required by the latest Office Connector was missing.

The only other possible cause I can think of is the switch to case-sensitive database collation. We use SQL Server 2008 r2 and with the latest wiki upgrade had to jump through some elaborate hoops to get the db changed to CS. Hope this helps someone.

We just upgraded from Confluence 5.3 to 5.7 and a user reported this problem the next day. I confirmed that I can no longer see the images in an embedded Word doc.

I'm having the problem too. It's kind of killing the case where you want to use Word Document (for OLD way user) with confluence... I hope this will be resolved soon.

Hi, any progress on this? We've just upgraded to the latest version of Confluence, attached a simple word doc and used the macro, no images! We're using Confluence version 5.7.3 which ships with:

            /opt/atlassian/confluence/confluence/WEB-INF/atlassian-bundled-plugins$ ls OfficeConnector-*
            OfficeConnector-3.3.18.jar

We are experiancing the same issue.
Many images appear to be broken in the word document. When we export the same page to a PDF all images are correctly showed in the document. The main page we export contains a lot of Included pages. Some of the images as you can see appear to be missing in the Word document. When we export a single one of the include page the images is shown correctly in the Word document.

            Confluence 5.4.3
