      This is related to CONF-5792.

The idea is that if I have a watch on a page, then I would like to get update notifications from the author of the change. That would allow me to directly reply to the email that I get in order to give them some feedback.

The concern in CONF-5792 was that for a public facing confluence instance, spammers would set a bunch of watches in order to harvest email addresses. That concern completely makes for externally facing instances.

On the other hand, this is not a concern for internal only systems. What ends up happening on our instance several times per week is that someone will respond to a "page was updated notification", which ends up going to a black hole.

When a user gets a notification of a change by a specific user, it is just natural to be able to send them immediate feedback.

I would like to also request to reopen this request. As confluence admin, I find myself forwarding replies to edits notices quite often (several times a week).

Why don't just add setting for tick in Edit mail server:

"Use users' email in Reply-To header".

And once any mail triggered by some user's action is sent then all recipients get notification with ability to Reply directly to email of person who actually made changes.

When I periodically check Inbox of system account which is used to send outgoing mail from Confluence I always see bunch of replies which have to be sent not to system account but to real users.

Please reopen this. It's not the same as direct comment on the page by reply. It's an option for those who want to reply directly to email of person who made something on Confluence.

            Hi bratwurst,

On 1, people usually prefer to know what our plans are for a request. Leaving it open leaves people with the assumption we plan to implement it at some point. Right now, we have no plans to do this so I think it's to everyone's benefit that we are just open about that.

On 2, Anna has described how to do exactly that, with a link to the docs for more details, above.

            Thanks,
            John

            1. It would be nice to be able to upvote this even if Atlassians current possition is that nothing is to be done.
            2. A simple resolution could be to set sender name to "Confluence". That would make it very much harder to get confused about the sender address.

"You'll see in Confluence 4.3 we are trying to help people Collaborate faster, and bouncing back and forwards from email doesn't really help this,"

Isn't that for us, your customers, to decide how we want to collaborate? Confluence isn't our messaging platform, nor will it ever be.

I recalled it being just the description part that we could change but if the name is a configurable part of the expansion then I'll change it back.
Either way, the change emails should be able to come from confluence but have the reply-to field set to the user that triggered the change. Users want to be able to reply to the user that made the changes.

Hi patrick bennett, you should be able to get rid of the Firstname Lastname part of the name - it sounds like you need to get rid of the ${fullname} part of the From Name. Please take a look at the docs on Configuring a Server for Outgoing Mail. If those don't help, feel free to raise a support request and we'll help you out.

Yes, and in our case we have it say something like [DO NOT REPLY] - yet it looks like 'Firstname Lastname [DO NOT REPLY]' - and users, since they apparently received a user from that user, hit reply... and that reply goes to... a black hole.
This is horribly broken and needs fixed or at a minimum, to be configurable.

By default it comes from "${fullname} (Confluence)", eg: a notification from an update you did would come from "Jason Mathison (Confluence)" so does include 'Confluence' but it is configurable, so you can just go the Mail Servers config page (admin/mail/viewmailservers.action) and set it to Confluence, or your instance name or whatever you like.

The core the problem is that the email is presented as being from a specific user, but the email address goes to confluence. If you won't change the email address to match the user, could you change the friendly name to confluence so that it matches the email address?
