If you install a plugin compiled against the wrong java version, you can't uninstall it.

            [CONFSERVER-7059] If you install a plugin compiled against the wrong java version, you can't uninstall it.

            Rather more nasty is that you can't even start confluence once a plugin with an unsupported class version in installed.

            Fixed in atlassian-plugin and revved in 2.3

            These two files might demonstrate the problem. 0.5 is compiled against JDK 1.5 and 0.6 is compiled against JDK 1.4.

            If you upload 0.5 to confluence running 1.4, you'll get an error (as you should). But then the plugin won't be deleted and you won't be able to replace it or upload any other plugins.
