At Confluence Onboarding, add "skip" option for "watch spaces"

    • We collect Confluence feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

NOTE: This suggestion is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

As a site admin, I don't want my first time users to have to watch spaces when they are doing on boarding on Confluence. Let them make this decision later. Please add a skip option in there too.

      Workaround

The default onboarding experience can be turned off by system administrators by going to Settings > Manage apps

And then changing the filter to "System" and searching for "Confluence Onboarding" there should be 1 matching add-on. Click on it and then click on the "Disable" button.

This will disable the onboarding experience and users will instead be taken straight to the dashboard on their first login without being required to watch or create a space.

See How to skip the onboarding page (welcome.action) for new users in Confluence.

      Solution

In Confluence 6.14.0 (to be released late January 2019), we replaced the existing onboarding flow for normal users (i.e. non-admins) with a simple modal dialog when they first login to Confluence. Users are no longer asked to watch a space.

Upgrading to Confluence 6.14.0 or newer will resolve this issue.

I like that this suggestion has been addressed. Unfortunately it's not enough as admins also get a welcome screen without any possibility to opt-out and therefore are forced to create a new, potentially unnecessary, space.

To address that point I've just created an additional suggestion CONFSERVER-58942.

In 6.14 we've simplified the onboarding for new users.

New users joining your Confluence site will no longer be prompted to upload a profile picture or watch spaces when they first log in. We’ve replaced the three-step onboarding wizard with a simple 'Welcome to Confluence' modal, so they can get to know your site before deciding which spaces to watch.

There is a simple workaround: disable the onboarding process, as follows:

            https://confluence.atlassian.com/confkb/how-to-skip-the-onboarding-page-welcome-action-for-new-users-in-confluence-777016501.html

            works like a charm.

This request is considered a potential addition to our longer-term roadmap. We'll typically review this request in about 12 months time and consider whether we need to alter the status.

Another problem with disabling the onbarding process completely is that Confluence no longer redirects to the chosen default space! We have a default space that tells new users about how we use confluence and now I have two options:

            • Disable onboarding and get no redirect to the page
            • Enable onboarding which makes new users get stuck on the watch space dialog (because they don't know what they should do and there is no skup button...)

It is really annoying for us administrators to manually have to remove first-time users as watchers from some spaces. It doesn't seem that the lists of spaces shown to the 1st time-logged-in users follows any kind of order either. I think this feature was implemented without any further thinking. Nice if this can be removed from the onboarding process, or provide a "Hop over" link at least.

I don't want to disable the onboarding process completely in my instance (as suggested here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/confkb/how-to-skip-the-welcome-action-for-new-users-in-confluence-777016501.html), but forcing new users to watch a space before they can use the product is just setting them up to simply ignore every single email from Confluence.  I would much rather users get email notifications for items they care about, not items they were unwittingly forced into getting notifications for.

Is there any way to disable just this page of the onboarding process?
