We are looking forward to live editing within Confluence. In order to support group editing of meeting notes during our public forums, where anyone around the world may join and we want to encourage everyone to help edit the notes, we'd like to have the option to put the page into an "edit by default" state while the meeting is taking place. Rather than requiring everyone to navigate to the meeting notes and be brave & motivated enough to hit an edit button, we would appreciate the option, while the notes are being taken, for users who navigate to the page (assuming they have edit privileges) to start in the collaborative live editing mode.

One of the powers of etherpad (and Google Docs) for community note-taking is people are instantly in edit mode as soon as they navigate to the page. While clicking an edit button may seem trivial, it can represent a real barrier to getting contributions from those who have never edited a wiki page before, are new to the community and uncertain if they should be editing the page, or regular attendees only partially engaged in the meeting.

So, as live editing comes to Confluence, please consider adding an "edit by default" option for pages being actively edited by others. This could be implemented as a general configuration option (e.g., "When live editing, newcomers join live editing automatically") and/or a page-specific option (e.g., "Newcomers join live edit automatically" checkbox somewhere near the "Invite others" link).

[CONFSERVER-35903] Support collaborative live editing by default

burke@openmrs.org Sorry a bit of confusion here - this was a bulk-close of all issues we've had open for a period of time with very little activity.

As you know we're already working on collaborative editing and we're focused on getting it right in edit mode first. We have no plans right now to get it also playing in realtime from view page... there are a crazy amount of considerations here such as how do macros work, what does the publish button do, how do we do it without having confusing edit modes (And a never ending list)... We have discussed this and will consider it in the future, but there are no plans on addressing this very detailed feature request in the next 6 months (of being able to view edits live without pressing edit)...

Wow. That's surprising. Live editing was presented as the feature for Confluence 6.0 in 2016. Sorry to hear that's no longer the case, since it's one of the biggest gaps in Confluence in a world of team-edited Google Docs & Etherpads. I was getting worried after months without any new news on the feature.

Thanks for the update. I'll reset my expectations accordingly.

Hello - thank you for sending in this suggestion! Unfortunately, we do not have any plans to implement this in the foreseeable future. In order to set expectations correctly, we're closing this request now. If you'd like to describe more how this would help in your own use of Confluence, we may be able to provide better guidance.
Thanks again for your idea, and please feel free to submit more!

            Regards,
            Confluence Product Management
