Description
NOTE: This suggestion is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.
After recent discussions with a couple of Atlassian's (at the Sydney AUG) and the maturity of the ASM for Atlassian install and upgrade script (https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/com.stuartryan.atlassian.asm) I am now looking towards the future to further be able to streamline the process for new installations of the Atlassian Suite (for new users).
Essentially what I am thinking of (long term.. i.e. endgame) is "Here Be Dragons", done with XML config files that can simply be submitted with a POST rather than going through web GUI configuration screens.
The first part of this that I would like to tackle is for Confluence, and allowing essentially a kickstart file to be submitted via a HTTP web service (for example) to auto configure the installation.
Essentially this should allow the pre-configuration of all the parameters that would normally be done via the web wizard GUI and allow far better automation of installs.
This should include:
- Database configuration details
- Backup restore details (if any)
- Hostname, Instance Name etc
- Administrator main details
- Most importantly CROWD configuration details to hook directly into a pre-configured crowd instance.
The end goal for this would be to
1. Provide example kickstarts to get new users up and running more quickly on starter licenses
2. Provide the ability to spin up development/DR environments on demand (by pointing to restore files etc as part of the kickstart).
3. Decrease the time it takes to prepare a new installation and make "Here be Dragons" an easier quest for all future questorians.
