Most popular algorithm seems to be picking pages with no comments and no likes

      Steps to reproduce:
      1. In a fresh Confluence installation, create a new page.
      2. Navigate to the dashboard and you'll see that the newly created page exist under 'Popular' tab although there is no comment and/or 'Like' yet.

It appears that most popular algorithm seems to be picking pages with no comments and no likes when it is not supposed to.

            Henning,

You are definitely using some customisation of Confluence. The standard version of Confluence does not have +, - symbols in the top right.

We have a few hundred pages in our Confluence Database, but still the same problem. The "Popular" Tab always lists 8 of them.

We run an internal instance of Confluence with more than a few hundred pages and we don't see the issues you described. Please raise a support request and we'll be happy to investigate this further with you.

            Cheers,
            Dave

            Dear Dave,

            Thank for the reply.

            >>we decided that it is better to show some activity than an empty tab.

We have a few hundred pages in our Confluence Database, but still the same problem
The "Popular" Tab always lists 8 of them.
"Filling empty space" does make sense for empty databases (as in the reproduction steps written by Hanis), but not for Confluence installations with a lot of content.

If a new page is created it appears in the Popular Tab" immediately on the top, and pushes other pages with comments backwards.

            >>You can use the "More" button to see content that has been demoted off the first page

The + and - button do not work in the popular tab, only in the other tabs. Please try yourself. I always see the same amount of pages listed.

We have no custom plug ins activated, so this seems to be a bug in standard Confluence.
It seems the popular tab puts new pages on top of pages with many comments and likes.

            >>the popular tab is the default tab on the dashboard
If another tab is selected, this tab is "memorized" until the next start of Confluence for the user.
Therefore I think the "Popular" Tab should really focus on the Popular Content, not the new content,
            because this is confusing.

            Please reconsider this bug.

This is intended, as the popular tab is the default tab on the dashboard, and we decided that it is better to show some activity than an empty tab.

If 5 pages are created (and none of them receive any likes or comments), they will be displayed (latest first) on the popular tab (and a user won't have to switch to the "All Updates" tab to see a similar listing). Secondly, if your site is active in likes and comments, the situation you describe in this ticket is ephemeral, and liked and commented pages will soon bubble up to the top.

They are even ranked above pages that have likes and comments

The boosting effect of likes and comments on a page lessen over time and this is intended so that new content can surface. You can use the "More" button to see content that has been demoted off the first page (and would have most likely have been consumed by users by then).

We have this problem, too. It confuses our users and they think "big brother is watching them".

New pages appear immediately under "Popular" pages, even they cannot be popular yet. They are even ranked above pages that have likes and comments. This way pages with many comments or likes disappear from the startscreen.

I would call this a "major bug" not "minor bug" because the popular pages function - which Atlassian advertieses - makes little sense like this.
