Centering a paragraph loses image effect

I did the following:

• Pasted in an image (dialog box said it was inserting a PNG)
• Applied an image effect (eg drop box)
• Clicked beside the picture (same paragraph)
• Hit the 'center' icon
• Result: Picture was centered, but lost Image Effect
