Google Gears is no longer supported so we need to Migrate to HTML 5

    • We collect Confluence feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

Drag and Drop currently uses Google gears which Google no longer supports.

In order to continue to support this feature we need to move to html 5.

      Status from Confluence PM

We are aware of Google's plans to discontinue Google Gears. Moving away from Google Gears to HTML 5 is in our short-term roadmap. We have taken steps to ensure the drag-drop capability still works in the latest browsers until then (eg Firefox 3.6 required some changes to ensure Gears works - we have implemented those in Confluence 3.2 (CONF-18774))

            Hi Sherif,

thank you for your answer. I'm in the middle of writing a blog post about Confluence's 3.5 Drag'n'Drop feature - with some technical background on how it is implemented and thought I would get a simple 'yes' to my assumption. Looks like it's not that easy

I'll take a look into the code and see what I can learn from it and may come back to you if anything unclear arises. Thanks again for you help!

            Regards

            Alex

Alexander - yes and no. Every browser has different implementations. What I can tell you is that we have tested it on major browsers and tried to get it working on as many combinations as possible. If you have any further questions might be worth emailing me so can take this conversation out of this thread. smansour at atlassian dot com.

Thanks Sherif, this is very helpful.

One last question: The documentation says that the Drag'n'Drop feature works 'If your browser fully supports HTML5'. I'm not that much into HTML5, but I guess that the implementation is based on the Drag and Drop feature documented here. So basically it should be sufficient if the browser supports this specific HTML5 feature, and not the full HTML5 specification, right?

            Kind regards

            Alex

            Alex,
This is documented here. Please note the documentation space is still in 3.5-beta - but what you are seeing probably going be the final docs for the drag and drop feature.

            Hi Sherif,

thanks for the update. How has this issue been resolved? How is it implemented - is it based on HTML5, is some sort of Plugin required? Which web browsers are supported?

I'm very curious about this. Looking forward to your reply

            All the best

We have had good success with using a patched version of the Atlassian Drag N Drop xpi plugin for Firefox (patched by Atlassian to work with FF 3.6x). We completely removed Gears.

            Refer to: https://studio.plugins.atlassian.com/browse/DND-8

Roy Hartono sorted this for us very quickly via a Support Ticket. Very happy campers here!

Matt, I'm using Snow Leopard, Firefox 3.6.8, Gears 0.5.36.0, Confluence 3.1 and dragging a PNG image from the Finder to the drop area results in the tab displaying the image (file:// URL).

Alex, what browser are you using? I'm running Snow Leopard and using Firefox 3.6.8 with Gears and drag-and-drop works for me.

Given the lack of Snow Leopard support and the growth of Chrome, it makes no sense that this is a "Minor" priority bug.
