      Status Update 16/3/2021

Automatic backup scheduling IS on our list, although not in the very first horizon, as we are looking to completely overhaul the backup/restore experience. Especially for those that have very large datasets. With that said, there will be a mechanism available to automate this yourself, until we build that functionality into the UI.

Click the link, click Send request to join, and we should get you in within 24 hours to review our strategy and provide feedback as we go.

      Problem Definition

Since we lost some data after a Confluence OnDemand upgrade but noticed the loss later than the 4 weeks, we would like to include the the Confluence backup into our local backup routines.

As I understand one has to manually create an export in the Backup Manager of JIRA and Confluence.

      Suggested Solution

Can you please add the possibility to automatic generate a backup each day or at least each week?

      Workaround

The below backup scripts are working (at this current point in time) but the endpoints might change without notice:

Please be advised that you should avoid executing these backup scripts during the maintenance window.

For more details on this, or for alternative ways to automate backups in Cloud, please refer to:

Hello everyone, thanks for your continued engagement on this topic. I would like to share some updates on the backup and restore roadmap :

            • In June 2024, backup and restore experience will be available in the Admin UI as a beta feature.
            • We will also expose public APIs, around Sep 2024, as an EAP, for customers who wish to script backup automations. Please do sign up here for the same.

The CLI EAP for both local storage as well as S3 storage is now closed for new enrolments. We have emailed the customers whose participation has been confirmed, with additional details for accessing the jar.

Please stay tuned more details on the features and scope that will be available as a part of these releases.

            Thanks!!!

            Hi,

Is there an update on this? What is the feedback from the EAP? Is this feature going to be available in 2025? Many would argue that this feature should be prioritised over any other new development, such as all the AI stuff, etc.

Automatic backup is very important to keep data.

Well, there seems to be work being done: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Trust-Security-articles/Sign-up-for-the-Early-Access-Program-of-the-revamped-Backup-amp/ba-p/2013944#M223
(Although it's probably not possible to join the EAP program any longer, I'd assume.)

There's even some documentation about it (& it's limitations).

This feature is beyond necessary. The current backup experience is severely lacking:

            • No progress bar (estimated time left)
            • No cancel button
            • No info on when the backup zip file was created
            • No size info on the backup zip file until it is downloaded
            • No scheduling unless using the API in automation.

This does not feel like it should still be open after 11 years.

Atlassian can do briljant things but what surprises me is that now the majority needs to be paid and/or is not fully finished. Also in this case.....why would you even consider to ask extra money for this? Is the base payment for the products not enough to provide this?

But beside that I suggest to embrace the fact that companies want to reduce the risk by having a backup at their own bucket.

This ticket is started on 17 april 2013.....I would expect that it could have been finished by now. The world is changing rapidly and demands IT companies to adapt....why would this long time (10+ years) be accepted by paying customers? Atlassian hello it is 2024 please shift gears.... We trust you can and will.

Since we are almost "forced" (big quotation marks here) to switch to Cloud since Server is not supported anymore, this is crucial. As a firm in the medical field data backups are a big issue for us and could essentially be a no-go for us. I can not understand how this is not already implemented and only considered AFTER officially not supporting the server variant anymore.

Correct me if I am wrong, but this is a basic function every program that can store critical/audit data must have.

I really hope this gets some more attention in the next months or we really have to consider switching. Validation of a Backup Strategy should be on top of your list.

            Hi there.

I say, on top of the need for a way to schedule backups, the chapter backup needs a complete overhaul to reach a standard, that is comparable to other professional software on the market.

Take a look at veeam backup. In veeam backup I have a backup browser, that I use to open an existing backup, drill down to the file or even in a 365 backup down to an email, select, click ok, and get the desired data back to where it belongs.

This (to me) is what we Atlassian users really want for Jira Cloud and Confluence Cloud.

Seeing these upcoming beta releases in their roadmap, looks like next year is the new target.

            New Backup Experience - Beta (Q2 2024)

Backup Restore API EAP (Q4 2024) - Sign up is available now for API EAP.

We are currently using the CLI Backup EAP that was announced early 2022, but that particular EAP is now closed. There was another CLI Backup EAP announced in August this year, but it appears currently restricted to the original CLI EAP group.

I would open a ticket w/support to inquire about signing up for the Backup CLI. Note this still requires some scripting & setup to automate, so if you're looking for a UI tool to accomplish may need to wait and see what they've come up w/for 2024.

There has not been an update on this in over 2 years? Backup and restore should be an absolute priority over new feature requests for enterprise organizations. Considering the internal backups are not available to the customer and cannot be used for restoring data, as I see it Atlassian Cloud poses a high risk to business continuity in the event of mass deletion and changes to workflows. Please give us an update!

Hello everyone, thanks for your immense patience on this topic. At this point, we're offering full backup and restore on local storage via CLI and we're in EAP. Coming in fresh this month, is CLI using which backup can be stored on S3. This is also in EAP. Once we post formally on community, I will repost the link here, in case you're interested in joining the EAP. We're actively working on a plan for GA with these features. The CLIs can also be automated via script, though with few constraints. We will come back with a post with more details. Apart from that we're working through internally on other ways backup can be automated. Thanks a lot once again for your patience on this topic!!!

This seems to be the second most highly voted for feature in the backlog and is 10 years old. An update was expected in early July, it's early August.

We still don't actually know what solution you've designed for this, whether it will solve the initial request or if it's feasible from an information security compliance stand point.

            Perhaps an update?
