Atlassian Bitbucket Services fail to start if the user who installed Bitbucket Server is a domain user

    XMLWordPrintable

Details

    Description

      Summary

If the user installing Bitbucket Server is a domain user, the Atlassian Bitbucket AtlassianBitbucket service is configured to run under the DOMAIN\atlbitbucket account, even though the installer creates the atlbitbucket account only on the local machine. This prevents the Atlassian Bitbucket AtlassianBitbucket service from starting due to a logon failure.

      Environment

      • Windows machine, joined to a domain
      • The user installing Bitbucket Server is logged on as a domain user

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. Log onto a Windows machine that is joined to a domain using a domain user
      2. Run the Bitbucket Server installation wizard and accept all defaults (i.e. choose to install Bitbucket Server as a service)
      3. Once the installer has finished, try starting the Atlassian Bitbucket AtlassianBitbucket service or the Atlassian Bitbucket AtlassianBitbucketElasticsearch service

      Expected Results

      The service starts without problems.

      Actual Results

The service fails to start due to a logon failure. (Windows error 1069)

      Workaround

To workaround this problem, change the logon user of the Atlassian Bitbucket AtlassianBitbucket and Atlassian Bitbucket AtlassianBitbucketElasticsearch services to the local user created by the installation wizard by following these steps:

      1. Open Computer Management from the Windows Administrative Tools
      2. Navigate to Local Users and Groups > Users
      3. Right-click on the atlbitbucket user and select Set Password
      4. Click Proceed
      5. Set a new password of your choice (you will need this later), confirm it, and click OK
      6. Click OK
      7. Close Computer Management
      8. Open the Services pane from the Windows Administrative Tools
      9. Right-click on the Atlassian Bitbucket AtlassianBitbucket service and select Properties
      10. Switch to the Log On tab
      11. In the field This Account replace DOMAIN\atlbitbucket (where DOMAIN) is your Windows domain with .\atlbitbucket
      12. In the field Password enter the password you set in step 5 above, and confirm it in the respective field
      13. Click OK
      14. Repeat steps 9 through 13 for the Atlassian Bitbucket AtlassianBitbucketElasticsearch service

Once you have completed these steps you should be able to start the Atlassian Bitbucket AtlassianBitbucket and Atlassian Bitbucket AtlassianBitbucketElasticsearch services without errors.
