Frequent "merge too large to display" for PR's regardless of size

Over the past week my team has been encountering more and more frequent "merge too large to display" messages in PR overview, with no apparent correlation to PR size (and none particularly large).

At first it seemed like the merge would eventually display after a couple of browser refreshes, but now things are just stuck. Unable to use!
