            It turns out I was wrong, and this is working as expected. The syntax highlighter expects <? or <?php.

            If you can, so look in my private repos. All of my php code blocks starts with ```php and without <?php are not highlighted

            No worries! And just to be clear, you shouldn't need to write <?php, if you invoke the code block using ```php.

            I am sorry, it's a habit from github to not write <?php. That was my problem.
