I think this is a reasonable enhancement request too. The project table portlet does NOT allow filtering by project category, and besides, this isn't likely the filter users would want (bearing in mind also that administrators set categories, not users).
For example, a project manager may be responsible for a dozen or more projects, but only 2 or 3 are active at any one time. So, it would be helpful to have a project table portlet called "My Active Projects" which would only show those. Below that, they might have another portlet called "All My Projects" which is essentially what they get now. And this portlet does not even sort by category anyway - only by project key. Neal has hit it on the nail head. Users not Admins want to determine what projects they see on their dashboard. Categories would not be granualar enough either since we would have roughly 50 projects that would fall under the Device Driver project category and the very last thing admins need is to maintain 500 project categories that would only cause the users to ask "why can't I just select the project instead of having to select a category?" I realize you guys there at Atlassian have very few projects to deal with but companies that are "long in the tooth" have many, that is why granular project filtering at the user level is important.
Essentially, for all project related actions (searching, portlets, etc.) JIRA needs multi-selection. How's this coming along? Will users be able to (multi) select which projects they want to see on their dashboards via customizing the project table portlet or multi-selected project portlet?
Hi Kevin,
Unfortunately this will not make JIRA 3.3 as we have about 100 issues still open for it and we are hoping to release in couple of weeks. Please note that if you have the right resources in house you can have a go at custromising the portlet: Thanks, We do have the right resource in house (me) to do it but I don't have the time to, that's kinda why I opted to purchase a issue tracker for the company instead of using bugzilla or the like. If you could schedule it to a minor release of 3.3 or in 3.4 I think I can hold back the rising tide of discontent for a little longer.
Unfortunately we cannot promise feature requests for specific versions - if you view our 'popular issues' page, you will see there are many other more popular feature requests also unscheduled.
As a workaround, you could enable the Text portlet (Admin -> System -> Portlets) and show people who to write HTML to list their projects. Alternatively, simply bookmarking the projects and displaying them in a bookmark toolbar may be sufficient. I'm training my users to create a portal page for each group of projects, and then pick individual projects to add to that page.
I looked over the popular and that is a substantial list. I don't know how many people are aware about this issue's existince so I wouldn't gauge its importance by the vote list. If you simply take into consideration the productivity boost that allowing multiple project selection for all project display related portlets you will see this is a good issue to implement. Thus far all other methods, such as those mentioned by Neal and Dylan, are essentially non-intuitive workarounds to compensate for a feature the software is lacking.
Case in point: 1) Add 200 unique projects to an installation. See how long adding the single project portlet takes you doing it 1 by 1. Keep in mind that managers and technical support personel are at times keeping tabs on more than 15 active projects (and we are a very small company.) With Anton implementing JIRA-699, I would have to say some of the groundwork for this modification is likely already done is it not? You're a good man Neal ... lol.
Any chance jira 3.3.1 will include some project portlet updates?
All project portlets need the ability to multi-select which projects you want to show in the portlet.
Kevin,
3.3.1 is a big-fix release, and will not contain any new features. Any chance we'll see this in version 3.6?
Kevin,
I hate to disappoint but we are pretty filled up for 3.6. I hope being able to restrict the portlet to a category ( Thanks, |

In Jira we have a concept of Project Categories. You can create different categories and then assign different projects to the different groups. The project portlet can be configured to show for a given project category. Is this not what you are after? If it is let me know and I will close this issue, if not could you clarify?
Thanks,
Dylan
