Many websites use XSL to style RSS output, creating a nice XHTML output. This helps to not scare away new users, and provide information on how to use the feed, links to a few aggregators, etc.

I think Jira would benefit from styling its XML issue view. To most of our users, the XML link on the search page appears useless, spurting out some programming language. A heading describing the content and how it might be used would help users discover the benefits of the various RSS technologies.

Matt,

Sounds like a pretty good idea. Do you have any sites in mind that does this well that you'd recommend us take a look at?

Cheers

Dive Into Mark has the best styled feed I've seen, adding pictures and links to a couple of aggregators. He uses XSLT and CSS on an Atom feed. This works in both IE6 and Firefox.

Wikipedia has quite a basic one, using only CSS. It doesn't look much better in IE, but works well in Firefox.

Just found another great example: FeedBurner.

This doesn't even show any of the XML content, which might be desirable.

An inspiring example! thanks.

Looks like Microsoft might make this unnecessary – starting from IE7 they're now styling RSS content automatically.

We have been offer the ability to style your rss for a while.

Though now FF2 and IE7 ignore any styling anyway so this is quite pointless.
