Subtask should inherit (some) fields from parent task as default values

This issue is archived. You can view it, but you can't modify it. Learn more

Subtasks in JIRA 3.1 are very handy, but since they are full-blown JIRA issues, creating them becomes a bigger burden than it should be.

In particular, I think subtasks should inherit, by default, some of the fields from the parent task, in particular

      -Priority
      -Component
      -Affects Version
      -Fix For Version

It's ok if they can still be modified but, when creating the subtask, those fields should be initialized to the parent's value.

[JRASERVER-6398] Subtask should inherit (some) fields from parent task as default values

Turns out it's a duplicate of https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRASERVER-5225, so closing this one

The issue JRASERVER-8818 "have subtask inherit component of parents" was marked as duplicated by this issue. However, it seems subtasks still do not inherit the parent component. That is, the component is not set by default to that of the parent. It should be.

Given that this issue, JRASERVER-6398, is marked as resolved while the issue JRASERVER-8818 still exists (at least in my cloud instance), perhaps JRASERVER-8818 should be reopened?

            HI Guys

Faced this situation but came up with a solution that meet this requirement using scriptrunner.

so for those of you that already have this plugin you can look at this : https://scriptrunner.adaptavist.com/5.0.4/jira/recipes/behaviours/subtask-default-fields.html

For those of you that do not know about it, you can still take a look at it, and give it a try

We were also looking for a way to copy fields from Header Jiras into Sub-task Jiras.

We are using the method described by 'Tim Bray added a comment - 09/Feb/10 3:47 PM'

This is working for us. We saw an error if any user attempted to edit a Jira, a re-boot of our JIRA server fixed this error.

            Hi guys,

We are currently doing some JIRA house keeping and I will be closing this issue as a duplicate of JRA-5225. I will also add those watching this issue to the main request.

Those of you that have not voted on JRA-5225 may also like to recast your vote there.

            Cheers,

The JSS plugin and Minyaa suite plugin both use post-functions to set values. The original description of this issue, however, focused on setting default values during the creation step (i.e. using the parent issue to determine which values should be selected by default when the user sees the create issue screen).

None of the solutions discussed here seem to address the original requirement. Has anyone found a way to do this?

            Hi All,

In order to resolve such issues, Minyaa comes with a set of Post-Functions.
Be able to inherit fields from Parent Issue is usefull, but you may need to update Sub-Task when Parent Issue fields change !

            For inheritance ...

            For propagation on Sub Task

For propagation on any Linked Issue

            Cheers

Thank you!!! We use it in our workflow!

And now i have another problem:
After updating some fields in parent issue, i would like the automatically update equal fields in subtasks.
My JSS-script don"t work, and i dont know how to write it correctly.
Has anyone solutions of this problem?
