Joe raises an issue.
Fred comments on the issue, asking a question.
Joe replies.
Fred never sees the reply, because he isn't a watcher.

I'm sure this is a common scenario (certainly is on jira.atlassian.com). We could fix this by having an "Add me as a watcher" checkbox on the comment page, unchecked by default.

I think the default should be configurable, I would like to see the default be to add the commentor as a watcher automatically.

Some of my users also want an automated way to keep track of issues after they are no longer assigned to them. The suggestion we got was to have a user-specific "add me as a watcher whenever I'm assigned to or comment on an issue" option.
