I would like to be able to search for issues that have
  • no value set in a specific field
  • the value in a number field larger than a specific number
  • the value in a number field smaller than a specific number
  • the value in a number field NOT equal to a specific value (could be a combination of the two previous)
  • no due date set
  • a due date earlier than a specific date OR no due date set

These capabilities do not seem to be there through the issue navigator.

I would recommend that you take a look at IBM/Rational ClearQuest, which provides a very flexible interface for defining searches/reports, where it almost exposes the SQL query directly. Maybe you should keep the current navigator as an easy tool for beginners, but augment it with a more flexible tool for administrators and advanced users?

This is a 'must to have' capability for searching. Currently the searching/filtering is kind of weak, especially without the 'NOT' functionality.

We love JIRA, however, the query feature needs a major infusion of functionality along the lines of the above description.

It's the single weakest area in the product, IMO. I'm confident that will change, but it's not clear when that will happen.

Jeff Turner [Atlassian] added a comment - 27/Apr/05 08:27 PM
Yes, we're very much aware that the search interface is lacking functionality, and it is likely to be a focus of improvement once 3.2 is out (where, incidentally, search speed has been drastically improved).

This is a major problem with JIRA. It should be able to provide the standard query type filters that are now standard in other issue tracking systems.
The filtering is very easy to use, but there needs to be a way to undertake more powerful query type operations, which can reference all fields.

Samuel Cai added a comment - 12/Jul/06 04:10 AM
We just moved from DevTrack, it provides powerful search function, so I think the serch function in JIRA is the weak part comparing to other bug system.

It's now been almost 3 years since this was reported. It's an important (and core) part of the product, which doesn't require a lot of changes. With JRA-1330 out of the way, is there any chance of putting this on the map?

Jane Silberstein added a comment - 06/Nov/07 12:49 PM
Advanced query capabilities was second to field level permissions on my JIRA must have list. It's now in first place. Let's please see if this one can become reality.
