It would be very nice to be able to config custom field visibility and Required by Create and Edit screens for Issues and SubTasks.

The only way to do this w/o modifying JIRA code that I've found is to muck around with the createissue.jsp and editissue.jsp (still haven't done this for sub tasks). However, this is extremely client specific and makes upgrading (where these jsp's are modified) a real hassle. It would be much nicer to add extra options to the admin section which allow config of field visibility/required by create and edit.

Can you elaborate on this a little bit more? Do you mean some fields appear when you Create but not Edit?

I think I have the same need: We have created a custom field for use by developers. Currently, this field is visible on all screens (registering a new issue++). I'd like to limit the visibility of this field to e.g. jira-developers. To me, it seems like this is possible for all predefined fields, but not for custom fields.

The ~~JRA-1330~~ issue is much more complete, with more thorough description, better requested functionality and # votes. I'd close JRA-5451 now if I could.
