If I could organize components in a tree like structure ( a Parent : Child type of link ) JIRA would be an excellent tool to implement issue management for systems management as well. In software development the issues are linked to sources in CVS in systems management they must be linked to configured items like a server, printer, installed software package and so on.
The request is for organizing components in a tree.

Jim,

What effect do you envisage hierarchical components having? If I have:

ComponentA
ComponentB
ComponentC

Do you just want the Components drop-down list to be suitably indented? Can an issue be assigned to ComponentC, or is that just a grouping? Or should a search on a parent component also include results for all subcomponents?

I've marked this as duplicate of JRA-846 - please add further comments there.

Cheers,

Assignments...

CompA
..CompApart1
..CompApart2
....CompApart3
CompB

Assign to CompApart3 assigns to all parents so:
.. CompApart2 and CompA

If I would add a child to CompApart3 it would inherit all assignments to
all it's parents. ( thus the word 'child' in a hierarchy tree )

If I would ' promote ' CompApart3 to a child of CompA it would remain
inherited assignments of CompA but the assignments of CompApart2 would be
lost.

( ... it is an alternative implementation of the tree interface, if you
want more algorithmic / mathematical details pls let me know ... )

But what would the effect of assigning to all parent components be? Just so you can search for issues with ParentComponent, and the issue assigned to ChildComponent turns up?
