It would be nice to be able to define different default dashboards for different types of users. For example, someone working in client services would probably be interested in a different dashboard view than a developer. Obviously everyone can create their own custom configuration but it would save a lot of time if we had a list of defaults to choose from.

My original question on the list :
  • how do I assign a dashboard to new user or group of users and how do I lock it, so he/she can't change it ?
  • how do I preset preferences of a new user ( eg locale ) and potentially lock it ?

My suggestion :

linking a default dashboard to a group poses a lot of problems as users can be in different groups at once. I suggest to do it the old-proven way :

  • allow administrators to change dashboard, locale etc for individual users.
  • introduce the notion of 'user templates' when creating users.

This is not a problem if you allow multiple dashboards per person. If there are going to be multiple dashboard 'templates' to choose from, it seems less than optimal to only allow a user to pick one.

Multiple Default Dashboards. I really can't see getting some people to create a dashboard.

All | Group 1 | Group 2 | Managers View |

Most my users will never create a dashboard. Or, if they do go through the (to them) hassle they'll never modify it when I modify the default with a 'cool' feature.

I'd like to see the 'default' dashboard always show up on the users screen as a default tab on the far left hand side of the screen. This dashboard will always = the default dashboard.

An additional comment is that I've created a project dashboard for a project I'm managing. It took about half an hour, but all my colleagues on this project love it, because it shows everything that's going on with the project. It would be good to be able to share this with either individual users or a Jira group. This would help for reporting activities on the project.

This new feature will be very helpfull in our company.
We have some group of users that do not know how to configure a Dashboard.
In this case, for each new user we have to configure his/her Dashboard.

David Demner - 10/Nov/05 04:59 PM
I would really like this feature. One obvious example would be one default dashboard for users and one default dashboard for systems staff. We should specify the default dashboard per group.

John Gill - 30/Nov/05 08:07 PM
I would like the ability to administer other uses dashboards, so I can set it up for them.

Mika Ruottinen - 14/Dec/05 04:27 AM
This wouls be an essential feature for our company as well! Most of our users would like to have a tailored portal(s), but they are not ready to do the job by themselves.

Daniel Garratt - 22/Jan/06 09:04 PM
We use our JIRA install for many and varied types of projects. Being able to define additional dashboards to show for certain
user types globally rather than on a per user basis would greatly improve the organisation of project information within our JIRA and in general the useability of the product for larger sites using JIRA to manage dozens of projects.

Is there any timeframe for inclusion of this feature?

Brian Nguyen - 23/Jan/06 09:28 PM
Hi Daniel,

I understand that this feature can be of great use, however it is yet to be scheduled for a specific release. Needless to say, we will keep you informed of any news relating to this issue.

Information on how we choose what to implement can be found here.

Thanks,
Brian

Having default dashboards per group and/or project would be very helpfull. The combination would be perfect As it is a lot of work to do this per user. And most of them are not willing or able to do it themselfs.
So the sooner the better....

Erich Oliphant - 15/Dec/06 01:38 PM
we're looking at a customized jira for an incident management system. This capability is a virtual necessity

Ed Wittmann - 14/Feb/07 02:51 PM
We have several hundred projects, which can make the default dashboard very slow. I'm messing around with the introduction jsp to simply show the projects by category. I am having the problem in that I can't figure out how to retrieve the project key.

Rene Duquesnoy - 18/Sep/07 12:34 PM
This is a very sexy feature. Lets get it implemented.

John M. Black - 09/Oct/07 03:22 PM
Does anyone think that the changes proposed in JRA-2509 would sufficiently address this? If so please vote for it; that would move it into 2nd place.

Srinivasu Kalluri - 15/Jan/08 08:40 PM
Just talked to Peter in support about this feature and I was pointed at this Jira issue for comments/voting. I see this more as a sharing of a dashboard than multiple dashboards. Here is how I see this work:

1. Anyone (primarily Jira admins) can create a custom dashboard
2. share it with a user, or group (when a user has share dashboard access rights or something similar)
3. when a user has more than one dashboard, show all dashboards one after the other (just like when a user created mutliple personal dashbaords).

Thanks for listening.
