Issues with no status, causing '"name" is not a field of Issue' exceptions

Through circumstances not yet understood, it is possible to create a new JIRA issue with no status. When such an issue is viewed, the status icon is blank, and in the log there is a long stack trace:

From examining the change history, such issues appear to belong in the 'Open' status. Clicking 'Resolve' and then 'Reopen' fixes the issue.
