Support the easy configuration of portlets for integration with the Confluence portlet macro

Details

    Description

With JIRA 4.0, portlets as an integration point with Confluence are still supported such that a Confluence page can contain the Jira Portlet Macro. However, the instructions for this macro will no longer be correct as of JIRA 4.0.

The old way of configuring the macro was to first configure a portlet, then get the "RunPortlet" URL and paste it into the Macro.

The new JIRA dashboard does not easily let a user discover this legacy url for a configured portlet, nor does it let a user configure a portlet with a UI.

When Confluence 3.1 is released, it will support a Gadget macro which supercedes the portlet macro, but according to Charles this Gadget macro requires too much back end to work in Confluence 3.0 and earlier.

At the very least we need to update the Confluence docs for using the JIRA portlet macro.

      In JIRA We could:

      1. enable the legacy dashboard to be used behind a hidden URL for this purpose
      2. Document the fact that the old process is gone and handle requests in support. If the demand is very low during the gap between JIRA 4.0 and Confluence 3.1, this may be feasible.
      3. Document how to create portlet URLs from scratch (there are one or two dozen parameters which must be entered on a URL)
      4. Create Instructions for users to enable the legacy portlet gadget bridge to expose the portlet urls.
      5. Add some functionality into JIRA 4.0.x for portlet URL configuration (based on the legacy code still there)
