we'd very much like to have a 'find similar' feature when creating issues, in order to reduce the number of duplicate issues that are created. this is the one feature that Scarab had that we miss.

Auto-detect duplicate/similar issues on entry

It would be very cool if you entered in an issue, and Jira matched against existing issues.

If the match probability is good, then you could suggest:

"Are these issues the same? Would you like to add your report as a comment to this issue?"

"Are these issues related? Would you like to link them?"

In all cases, you could prompt the user to vote/watch the matched issues.

This would reduce the number of duplicate issues - and would enhance the quality of the information entered.

Its kind of ironic that my issue about avoiding duplicates is itself a duplicate... that would have been prevented by the very feature under discussion

I personally like the way launchpad handles this issue: when creating the issue one sets the summary and on the next page the similar issues are shown. At the bottom theres the button to advance to the real isse cretion page.

Of course the best would be to interctively update a list of similar issues as I type in the issue summary/description...
