Allow issues to be created from emails that do not have a subject

    • 4
    • We collect Jira feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

NOTE: This suggestion is for JIRA Server. Using JIRA Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

We have two current support requests in which customers would like to be able to create issues from emails that have a blank subject. They state that they cannot guarantee that users will always enter a subject in their email, but that they still really want issues to be created for these emails.

Our current CreateIssueHandler rejects emails that do not have a subject.

So this improvement request is that we consider providing a configuration option so that administrators can decide whether they want emails with no subject to be:

      • rejected, or
      • accepted with some default subject, with maybe the ability to specify what the default subject would be.

Thanks for taking the time to raise this issue.

Due to the large volume of JIRA feature suggestions, we have to prioritise our development efforts. In part, that means concentrating on those issues that resonate the most with our users.

I am writing this note to advise you, that we have decided to close your Suggestion as it has not gained traction on jira.atlassian.com. We believe being upfront and direct with you will assist you in your decision making rather than believing Atlassian will eventually address this issue.

Thank you again for your suggestion and if you have any concerns or question, please don’t hesitate to email me.

            Kind Regards,

We tried using JEMH but it's not supported using the current version of JIRA.

We use JIRA to run a help desk. We receive email from thousands of people, so we can't control the subject line or mail client they use. When they send email without a subject, JIRA spits out a message to our sys admin, who manually enters the ticket--this is prone to errors. It would be much better if JIRA created a ticket and set the subject to NOSUBJECT, which our help desk agents would replace later when we review the ticket.

JEMH can support this, you can configure it to provide a default.

We really need a fix for this as well. We are loosing support mails because of this issue. It would be nice if we could receive a patch for Jira 3.x in addition to the fix you do in the main branch.

This actually created an e-mail storm for us. The email without a subject was rejected but the followup email from JIRA was then processed as a new message many times.

All issues need a summary. If we do implement this, we will need to set the summary to something for e-mails that do not have a subject. We can make "something" configurable.
