When you have a select list which is optional, there is no way to search for issues that do not have a value defined. This is particularly annoying when you are trying to assign a value to them and you cannot filter them.

No way to search by empty values in select list (none)
The feature request for this functionality is JRA-7909. Please vote for JRA-7909, and add yourself as a watcher to receive updates on that issue.
