Sub-tasks cannot be edited. Permission schemes have been checked, and talking about the issue with support people (in https://support.atlassian.com/browse/JSP-4816) led to conclusion that Workflow based permissions plugin is responsible for the problems.

The bug is also mentioned here: http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRAEXT/JIRA+Workflow-based+permissions+plugin and I also commented on the matter in http://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-6381

The workflow based permissions plugin is not supported and does not work in later versions of jIRA.
