A customer has brought up an excellent point that if Confluence is to have richer blogging capabilities, it would be highly desirable to allow unlimited users to sign up and add comments to News/Blog posts.
Only named users, within the relevant license restrictions (Team - 25 users, Workgroup - 50 users, etc.), would be able to create news (or carry out other Confluence functions), but anyone could sign up and leave an identifiable comment on a public blog/news post.
