Track user metrics - number of pages, words, characters contributed to Confluence

    • We collect Confluence feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

NOTE: This suggestion is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

To help generate an active knowledge management culture it would be great to be able to track user metrics around how much a user has contributed to Confluence - number of pages, number of comments, number of words, number of characters.

With this information, organisations can then track and reward usage to help manage their knowledge management culture.

The feature that Jared has requested in the comments of #4011 has been raised separate issue - #8102.

Agree with Jared and Andreas sentiments.

Counting words is not the only measure; sometimes the greatest contribution can be to fine tune content so that it makes sense (few words).

Perhaps a starting point could be to have another parameter; at the moment we have "author" but if I modify a page that I have not created then my change is not shown.

So "author" only counts to mods of pages you created.

I would perhaps add a new parameter called "editor" where you pick up contributions to any content - whether created by you or no. This will be a good starting point to commence measuring contributions.

I'm also interested in what Jared suggested. Shall we create a new issue for that or shall it stay within this one? IMHO it's a different use-case than counting words that have been contributed.

I'm looking for something similar and probably simpler to implement. We use confluence for academic courses, and the professors need a way to look at all the contributions a student makes.

MediaWiki has a user contributions page for every user which lists:

            • the pages the user edited
            • the date of the edit
            • a link to the diff so you can see what changes were made
            • the comment (optional short explanation by the user of the change that was made)

Here is an example of a user contribution page in MediaWiki:

A customer has also requested the ability to reflect this rating in a users name/profile - e.g. Regular contributor, Power user, Occassional contributor, etc. Or even a point based system like a dexterity rating in a strategy game, contributions = 5 / 10. This would help to publicly acknowledge contributions which may encourage people to contribute. Again, feedback would welcome.

Customers have requested this feature in order to rewards users for their contributions and relate the contributions to, say, the knowledge management contribution component of an employees review process. The dilemma seems to be around how best to fairly reward users and not allow users to abuse the system - an interesting challenge. If you are reading this, please add your comments/thoughts.

This would be a great feature, however if it is implemented there should be a switch to hide it - on community sites it would likely encourage spammers...
