Hi. Every time I add a new group, it is very tedioius to go back and click on each user, then click on edit groups, then click the new group, then click join, then click Back three times to get back to the list of users.

I would like a group management interface:

  • A (filtered) list of all users with checkboxes by their names.
  • filtered list should be able to show users not in a group too.
  • check-all and uncheck-all links
  • a group dropdown
  • "add these users to group" button
  • "remove these users from group" button. (no errors if they're not already in the group)

Other additions that would help:

  • rename groups
  • re-sort groups
  • quickly see what space permissions a group has

Related / duplicate issues: JRA-1549 JRA-2207 JRA-4588 JRA-5460 CONF-2191

Please clean the issues a little and put the the user and group renaming on your road map - not having the renaming capability is a major pain.

Sulka,
The issues are now cross-referenced between applications (JIRA and
Confluence).

Thanks for pointing out the commonalities.

Cheers,
Nick

The ability to Add Multiple Users to a Group at one time would be extremely beneficial.

Currently Group based user management is very difficult when you have large numbers of users.

John Price - 14/Sep/05 08:54 AM
I agree - user management needs an overhaul. I find it pretty confusing.

Nick Faiz - 05/Oct/05 07:39 PM

The user management system will undergo change post 1.5 . We will consider what is above. If you have any more ideas on the topic now would be a great itme to put them forward.

Cheers,
Nick

We need a way to allow other, non-admins to manage Groups. See my comments on CONF-1514.

Michal Szklanowski - 14/Dec/05 01:48 AM
I'm sorry to say this, but we were waiting so long for this improvement, so we decided to do this ourselves. In the attached screenshot you can see the screen of the user managagement console plugin, which has the simplest and most intuitive interface for this particular activity.

Michal Szklanowski - 19/Dec/05 06:21 AM
Oops, I just posted by mistake our JIRA user management console screenshot. Here is the Confluence one. Although the user interface is VERY simple, it simply does the job.

Daniel Ostermeier - 19/Dec/05 11:08 PM
Thanks for letting us know. Its great to hear that you have been able to use the Confluence plugin system to extend Confluence to meet you requirements.

Stefan Baader - 13/Jan/06 09:11 AM
We propose urgently to enable group admins to administrate their user group. Imagine that in a larger company the IT department does a boring job to administrate 100 user groups for the space owners. The alternative is that the space admins have to manage hundreds of individual users with all the permissions getting enabled for each.

So the keyword is: delegated administration

Regards to all
Stefan

Sulka Haro - 13/Jan/06 09:33 AM
Stefan I suggest you go and vote on JRA-3156.

Lindsey Snell - 16/Mar/06 08:36 AM
What is the current status of changing the way groups are managed? The last comment was that its being looked into for 2.0 but that has now been released with no change to group management.

We too are finding it very tedious having to add a new group to each user rather than quickly being able to select a set of users and add them to a group (as the plugin developed here shows).

Rather than every company re-writing this macro can we get something like this included in the next release? Or a plugin made available?

Samson O - 18/Jul/06 06:17 AM
We have been using this aswell and find Group Managemenbnt frustrating. We dont have a development unit here to tweak the system to benefit us. So please setup a plugin for easier management.

Volker Kleinschmidt - 14/Apr/07 08:11 PM
Jira got this obviously needed feature already - see http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/JIRA+3.5+Release+Notes, so why not Confluence?

Aaron Hossain - 25/Sep/07 08:02 AM
Bulk user management can be done using this excellent comamnd line utility by Bob Swift

http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/CONFEXT/Confluence+SOAP+Client+in+Java

You can easily script almost any user management task and even bulk import from .csv file. I can thoroughly recommend this, it saved me a lot of time adding 100's user to groups.

Oleksii Gnatkevych - 09/Jan/08 07:47 AM
So how do I rename group in Confluence? Is there anyone who can write SQL for this? Or name all the tables and fields that hold the group names.

James Pearce - 31/Jan/08 05:03 PM
I am using the hosted Confluence solution and find the lack of this functionality very annoying. As plug-ins are limited in this service I would like to see this feature added!

David Lacey - 04/Mar/08 11:34 AM
It would be nice to have the system be able to add or delete users from LDAP groups as well.
