Confluence performance / installation issue when using Java 6 u18 - u22

      Some customers have reported Confluence performance and installation issues when using using Java 6 Update 18 64 bit. The problem may also be evident when using Java 32 bit.

      Resolution

      Upgrade to Java 6 Update 23 or higher

      Workaround(s):

      • If using Update 18 or later, add to your setenv.bat/sh:
        -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/apache/velocity/runtime/directive/Foreach,render

      Please see tomcat forum for relevant discussion on the issue.

            As well as using the latest JDK version, we've also added a workaround for this issue in Confluence 3.4.9 and later.

            We upgraded a Windows machine with 1.6u23 in anticipation of fixing an issue where Confluence is constantly utilising very high amounts of memory, but it did not help. We are considering downgrading to 1.6u17. In this case, it reaches the limit of Xmx to within 3% and stays there - seen via Admin > System Information.

            Looks like Oracle have released an early-access version of 1.6u23, which is reported to contain a fix for this issue.

            If anyone wants to try out the EA release in a test environment and see whether it helps, that would be much appreciated. We don't have a reliable way to reproduce the failure here.

            I installed 6.0_21 32bit but java crashed also.

            Java has been downgraded to 6.0_17 and confluence is working for one day without crashes.
            I haven't disabled -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/apache/velocity/runtime/directive/Foreach,render yet.
            After next crash I'll disable it also.

            Thanks Leon, we actually upgraded to the 64-Bit 6.0_21 but we had the same problem.
            Will try the 32-Bit version.

            We just hit this problem with Confluence 3.1.1 and Sun JDK 1.6.0_18 with the exact error message above (attempted 16GB allocation). We will attempt a different JVM version.

            Really, any news on 6_u20?
