[CONFSERVER-18668] Links Browser: Editing a link will remove existing tooltips

            Hi All,
We have had a lot of discussions about tooltips for links over the last couple of weeks. Upon speaking to some of our customers it appears the main use case this is used for is to display additional link information. An example would be for an abbreviation: A user could hover over an abbreviation link and get a description of what the abbreviation was. A large majority of our customers don't use this feature at all.

With this in mind, we don't believe this is the right solution for what most users are after. Users are after a similar solution to the PopView Tooltip Plugin. We recommend users try this plugin, or consider raising new feature request for a similar macro.

What am I missing here? Tool tip is a functionality that has been available for a while and that we encourage our users to take advantage of. Now, with this release the use of the link browser will delete the information from the page. It sounds like you feel able to rationalize this because either most people do not use them or that most people to not use the link browser.

Are you nuts?? It was difficult enough before when the link browser did not put the link in the correct place. Now you are telling us to tell our entire user community not to use it and to learn the wiki markup format. Our recent site statistics indicate that we have just under 40,000 successful page request per day so we will likely have a fare number of users scattered all over the world that will be affected. It is not reasonable that we will be able to successfully prevent them from shooting themselves in the foot and wondering why the tool mysteriously deleted some data. The worst thing you can do to build user confidence is to delete user data without telling them.

I respectfully suggest that the priority of this bug fix be elevated.

Unassigning this issue from myself, because I have updated the docs for 3.2.

If we don't fix this, then I agree that we need to mention it in the docs: In the Upgrade Notes for 3.2 as well as the User Guide. There may very well be customers who use the tool tips for a specific purpose.

Is there a reason why we don't let them provide tool tips in the link browser, e.g. is it non-standard in some way, or was it purely for purposes of simplification?

Also, I don't think there's a way to disable the links browser even if you disable the Rich Text Editor, so people can't safeguard their tooltips.

I don't know whether there are any customers who use the tooltips extensively.
