I have a hard time telling when I am watching a page. The envelope image clicking back and forth between watch and not-watch should be more apparent. Maybe it is because I am color blind, but I think it should be more clear. Either do a completely different image, or make the colors contrast way more. Also, when clicking back and forth trying to figure out if I was watching or not - I didn't know what image indicated watch and which one didn't. Maybe the envelope, when clicked on, could change to say: 'Watching.'

Just ideas.

Rather than having different icons when you are watching a page it should say "Stop Watching".

This makes it more obvious that you are already watching the page and that you have the option to stop watching it. (just like JIRA does)

I agree. The language should change from "watch" to "stop watching" or "un-watch" or something similar. It's really hard to tell when you're watching a page.

On 2.8 and above, the menu no longer shows the hover text from on previous releases making this much less usable than before. The hover text use to show the stop or start watching. Changing the default menu text is the best option. However, it would also be a good idea to have the hover text for menu options brought back to provide additional help text - for example, what does watch mean.

Yeah - I agree the hover text should say 'Start Watching' and 'Stop Watching.' I think that would be a very clear indication of action items one could take.

Morgan, can you have a look at http://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-4455 and tell me if those improved icons are better to distinguish for you now?

Unfortunately, I agree with Chris Walker on that one. Though it is darker, it is still just an image of an envelope.

Does the image have to remain to be an envelope? Why does that indicate watching something? I think merely changing the colors of the same image is too confusing. There are 2 things that are leading me to have issues with this:

1) I'm color blind
2) Because it is the same image - when I go to see if I'm watching a page, I can't tell if it is the dark one, or the light one.

Recommendations:

Completely change the images. Rethink that could be used instead of an envelope. If the image must remain, for whatever reason, an envelope, why not have 'Watch' coupled with a closed light envelope, and then when you click on it, the envelope opens, goes darker, and the text now says 'Stop Watching.'

In fact, I just went to 'watch' issue CONF-4455, there was no envelope image, and it was VERY clear my options were 'Watch it,' then, after clicking on it, it says 'Stop watching.' Much better.

Per,
is there a technical reason why we can't use the word "Un-Watch" rather than having two similar icons?
