Validation doesn't quite work as when setting the field (e.g. cvs module), a preliminary validation occurs (e.g. in the method updateAndDetectIfRepositoryHasChanged) and this returns the original value if the new value is empty. Hence it passes the validation code later on which does spit out the error message.
